If we ever need little luxuries, now is the time. Here in Wisconsin, it is cold and dreary. We are most likely experiencing snow or freezing rain. Light creeps in slowly in the morning, and vanishes quickly in the early evening. It is easy to let ourselves feel down or even a little depressed this time of year.
No wonder animals hibernate. It is tempting.
Why not experience little touches of comfort, warmth or light? Winter is difficult enough without depriving yourself of little things to treat your senses and put a positive spin on your day.
Here are some of my favorite little luxuries:
A second cup of coffee
One cup of coffee in the morning makes me feel human, but a second one is an indulgence. Despite the added caffeine, makes me feel relaxed and warms me to my toes.
A couple of fresh flowers in a small vase or bottle
Flowers always make me happy. In the words of my daughter, ” Life is short. Buy yourself flowers once a week.”
Fresh berries in my yogurt
Berries can be expensive this time of year, but I love them and they make me feel like I am eating a healthy diet. We all need a healthy, luxurious treat. Bring on the blueberries.
A nicely scented candle
I rarely use candles except in the winter. I crave the added light and warmth. I am choosy about scent, but usually find good ones on sale at Marshalls or TJ Maxx.
A fire in the fireplace
I love everything about having a fire in the fireplace. More warmth and light, and a great scent too. Staring at a fire, whether it is a campfire or in a fireplace, is a great way to reduce stress.
The perfect playlist
I have music playlists on my iPad for relaxation and for exercise, but the one I use most is “Michele’s favorite songs” playlist. It instantly comforts me, grounds me when I am on a plane, and never fails to make me happy.
An hour with a good book
This is my favorite reward. When I worked sixty or more hours a week I struggled to find time to read. Now, I know that when I can’t find time to read my life is out of balance. Your out of balance barometer may be different, but whatever your thing is, you should find time to do it.
Do you allow yourself little luxuries? What do you do to indulge yourself with small things that make you happy? I’d love to hear your thoughts and maybe even steal a few new ideas!
